Written in "eHealth Solutions for Healthcare Disparities", on page 78, the emergence of Evidence-Based eHealth Applications are making consumers aware of how to reduce risk factors, including multiple health risks such as tobacco and unhealthy diets. Also, on page 79, we learn that consumer-driven health plans shift financial risks and management to the consumer. Hence, the idea is to have people acting like consumers when their own money is on the line.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) stated earlier this year that Americans spent $2.5 trillion on health care amounting to $8,160 per person.

One way people are saving more of their own money is through Consumer-Driven Health Plans (CDHPs). Also, known as High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs).

...eHealth Soutions also notes that the consumer's role in driving the growth of eHealth applications have the capability to significantly lower costs in a very fragmented healthcare system.

Discounts are great, but what we, the consumer, really need is not just portability, but affordability. So, in the ongoing pursuit of the perfect healthcare plan, which has yet to be designed, CDHPs are the best things going to help rid the world, well...these United States of healthcare disparities.

  2. Note: The $2.5 trillion mentioned spent on healthcare was during one calendar year, in 2008, and has been running as much as of total GDP ever since, according to the New York Times.
